A Prevention Program

Staying healthy, active, and fracture-free are optimal goals for everyone, especially as we age. However, to ward off osteoporosis and stay fracture-free, prevention steps are necessary. In millions of people, prevention is possible as groundbreaking reports tell of the importance of calcium, exercise, and treatment for post-menopausal women, to keep bones strong.

If you have none or few risk factors and have not been diagnosed with osteoporosis, then the following steps will give a clear understanding of what you can do-starting today-to prevent osteoporosis and stay fracture-free your entire lifetime.

  • Build strong bones with a nutritious diet - enough calcium- check with your physician on the amount of calcium you require.
  • Begin a regular exercise program- weight bearing and back strengthening - your physician can guide you on an exercise program for you.
  • Ask your physician about bone-building medication after menopause to prevent bone loss.
  • Stop smoking cigarettes and avoid heavy consumption of alcohol.
  • Educate yourself about medications known to increase risk, especially cortisone products.
  • Be aware of medical problems that increase risk.
