Halting the Baby Boomers’ Disease

What is the baby boomers’ disease? Osteoarthritis is a diagnosis that four out of five of the 80 million aging baby boomers will eventually hear in the next few years. Many researchers predict that arthritis; especially osteoarthritis will be the epidemic of the future. Osteoarthritis is one downside of aging that causes great physical, emotional and financial pain.

Arthritis means inflammation around the joints. This causes pain, swelling, or stiffness in the back, knees, hips, hands or other joints. According to an article in the latest Journal of American Geriatric Society, Osteoarthritis is the most prevalent articular disease in older adults.

There is no known cure for osteoarthritis. Current management of this disease should include safe and adequate pain relief using systemic and local therapies and should also include medical and rehabilitative interventions to prevent loss of mobility.

You should see your doctor to take control of the symptoms of pain and stiffness. Get an early diagnosis. Ask you doctor questions such as: Does the treatment have to be the most expensive to work? How long should it take before I feel some relief? Are there any side effects with this medication that I should be aware of? Does stress affect osteoarthritis? Would weight loss help this disease? Should I look at non-standard treatments as well? What kind of exercise is good for me?

Your doctor is there to help you, but you are your best advocate…be ready when you see your doctor. Learn all that you can about your disease and be a well-educated patient that takes control of your own treatment.
